Meet the SNo. 4
The SNo.4 was a bit of a no-brainer to make – it splits the difference in size between the XSNo.4 and the full sized No.4. When you are rounding out a complete family of planes, this one filled a gap. As it turns out, it is the one size I would (personally) choose if I could only have one unhandled plane. It fits my medium sized hands perfectly and my preference towards smaller, nimble planes. There is another variation – the SNo.4L – the ‘L’ for long. The standard size is SNo.4 is 6-1/2” long with a 1-3/4” wide blade. The SNo.4L is ½” longer overall but still has a 1-3/4” wide blade. If you have longer fingers, the extra length in the SNo.4L might be for you.
